Accomplishments
- Coached the Michigan State University football team for 19 years until his retirement in 1972.
- Compiled a 109-69-5 record, the best mark in Michigan State history.
- His Michigan State team was named national champion by various polls in 1965 and 1966.
- Was named NCAA football coach of the year in 1955 and 1965.
- His second-ranked and undefeated Spartans played undefeated and top-ranked Notre Dame to a 10-10 tie in 1966 in what the national media had dubbed “The Game of the Century.”
- As a player, was a first-team guard at Syracuse University for three years and captained the Orange Bowl squad during his senior year.
- Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984.
- Northern Cambria High School football field named in his honor.
