Carlton Haselrig, the six-time NCAA champion wrestler and former Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl offensive guard, recently had his own day.
The City of Johnstown declared January 19, 2016 as Carlton Haselrig Day in honor of Haselrig’s upcoming induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Haselrig’s high school, Greater Johnstown, also honored him during a ceremony at the Johnstown Middle School, where the wrestling team competes. Haselrig is an assistant coach in wrestling and football at the high school.
Haselrig won a PIAA championship in 1984 – wrestling on his own because the Trojans didn’t have a team – and became the only wrestler ever to win six NCAA titles – three in Division II and three in Division I – during his career at Pitt-Johnstown, where he went 143-2-1.
He’s a member of a number of halls of fame, including those for Cambria County, Pitt-Johnstown and District 6, and he was named to the NCAA’s 75th anniversary team.
Despite not playing college football, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1989 and became a Pro Bowl guard with the team.
The Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame inducted Haselrig for his wrestling achievements in 1990 and again honored him for his football career in 2014.
