Greater Johnstown High School all-state defensive back Joe Greenwood made an impact locally before embarking on a successful NCAA Division I career at Temple University followed by two years in the World League of American Football.

In 1983, Greenwood became the first Trojan to earn first-team all-state honors since 1958. That success led to a scholarship to Temple, then coached by future NFL Super Bowl-winner Bruce Arians. Greenwood contributed all four seasons from 1985-88 and started both his junior and senior years.

As a senior, he made four interceptions and finished his college career with six picks and 148 tackles for the Owls.

The NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles signed Greenwood as a free agent in 1989 and he appeared in two exhibition games before his release. Greenwood signed with the Frankfurt, Germany, Galaxy in the new World League of American Football. He spent two seasons in the WLAF and made three interceptions.
