Greater Johnstown High School and Penn State University graduate Mike Garbinski will be inducted posthumously to the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame in the Class of 2024 on July 13.

Garbinski was an offensive guard on the Penn State football team in 1939 and 1940, playing on the “Seven Mountains” line on successful Nittany Lions teams. Garbinski’s college football career was interrupted when he joined the U.S. Armed Forces and became the first Nittany Lions player to leave the program to serve his country in World War II.

After serving in the Pacific Theater, Garbinski returned home from World War II and rejoined the Penn State football team in 1945. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the 1946 NFL Draft, but he returned his alma mater and had a lengthy and successful career as an educator and coach at Greater Johnstown.
