Len Chappell, who starred at Wake Forest University and in the National Basketball Association, died on July 12 at age 77.

The former Portage High School star led the state in boys basketball scoring average as a senior in 1958. Chappell never forgot his Portage roots.

The Mustangs’ gymnasium is named after the man often described as “a gentle giant.”
