Accomplishments

  • Nanty Glo resident rose through the Johnstown Johnnies organization to major league baseball. Part of Johnstown Johnnies Middle Atlantic League championship teams in 1925 and 1926.
  • Batted .376 with 40 home runs in 1930 with the Rochester Red Wings of the International League.
  • His 180 runs batted in (RBI) set an International League record.
  • Inducted into International League Hall of Fame in 1951.
  • Joined the Major League’s St. Louis Cardinals in 1931.
  • Slugging first baseman starred on the 1931 and 1934 World Series-winning Cardinals.
  • Helped the Chicago Cubs win a pennant in 1938 and finished MLB career with Pittsburgh Pirates in 1941.
  • Selected to the all-star team in every league in which he played, minors and majors.
  • Paced the 1932 Cardinals in home runs (21) and tied with pitcher Dizzy Dean for the team lead in sacrifice bunts (8) — the only time the Cardinals’ best home run hitter also was their best everyday player at advancing baserunners with bunts.
  • Major League career .296 batting average with 1,121 hits, 135 HR, 659 RBI.
