Tom Yewcic was instrumental in a number of Patroits alumni events over the years.

Accomplishments

  • All-State player in basketball at East Conemaugh High School and an All-American in football at Michigan State.
  • Quarterback led Michigan State to undefeated season and national championship in 1952, and followed up by helping the Spartans earn a share of the 1953 Big Ten title as well as a Rose Bowl victory over UCLA.
  • An All-American catcher in baseball at Michigan State.
  • Named Most Valuable Player of the 1954 NCAA baseball championship tournament, which is now known as the College World Series.
  • Played professional baseball and advanced to the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers.
  • Minor league baseball career started with a home run in his first at-bat with Wilkes-Barre in Class A. Later hit a grand slam in his first Class AAA at-bat with Buffalo.
  • Played pro football with the Boston Patriots in the American Football League for six seasons as a punter and quarterback.
  • Considered one of the top punters in early Patriots’ history, Yewcic was named to the team’s all-1960s squad.
  • Member of AAABA Hall of Fame.
  • Conemaugh Valley High School football field named in his honor.
