Fran Urban had been deemed to small in stature to play high school sports at Greater Johnstown, but after a late growing spurt and a successful three-sport stint while stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army, Urban evolved into a NCAA Division I quarterback.
Urban spent four years at what now is known as Arizona State University, quarterbacking the Sun Devils to a 10-1 record in 1959, when he earned a spot in the all-star Copper Bowl.
