Accomplishments

  • Conemaugh Valley standout won the 1982 American League Cy Young Award.
  • Pitched  the Milwaukee Brewers to the AL pennant and a berth in the World Series.
  • Game 7 starter against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982 World Series and left game with the lead.
  • Won 93 games in 11 major league seasons with the Brewers, Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox from 1975 through 1986.
  • Led the league with 14 wins during the strike-shortened 1981 Major League season.
  • Went 18-6 during his Cy Young season in 1982.
  • Had league-best winning percentages of .778 in 1981 and .750 in 1982, both with the Brewers.
  •   Selected by the Chicago White Sox in the third round of the 1974 amateur draft.
  • Played at Clarion University and was a three-sport standout at Conemaugh Valley.
  •   Had a role in the motion picture “Major League” as Yankees slugger Klu Haywood.
  • Joined the Pittsburgh Pirates staff in 1992 and held a number of administrative and coaching positions during 20 seasons.
  • Served as Pirates’ special assistant to the general manager and assistant GM-Director of Player Personnel.
  • Was Pirates pitching coach for four seasons from 1997 to 2000.
  • Joined the Seattle Mariners as a special assistant to the GM prior to the 2012 season and was with Mariners through 2015.
  • Took position as a professional scout in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in 2016.
  • Became the first Johnstown player to appear in the AAABA Tournament four consecutive years (1969-72), including three straight years with the Monte Carlo franchise (1970-72).
  •  Member of the Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame, Western PA Sports Hall of Fame, AAABA Hall of Fame and Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
